Pacing is one of the most complicated elements in filmmaking because it's all contingent on reception. Filmmaking is difficult enough to control, but once the audience is receiving the story, the control is entirely in their hands. If the audience is emotionally engaged, stretching a moment so they can swim in the feelings that the filmmakers have worked so hard to create is thrilling. If the emotions are dead, then all you've done is create more boring nothing for the audience to tolerate.
Cosmos Will Save The World is a beautifully simple, masterfully metered story. It's hypnotic in its simplicity but not needlessly. The overwhelming simplicity of it isn't just a stylistic choice, it's reflective of the bafflingly complicated elements at play (elements that make the simplicity even more remarkable).
