Michel Gondry's influence on the world of music videos cannot be overstated. His more recent works have given way to the feeling that, despite how entertaining the trick is, he's sort of a one-trick pony. While Gondry seems to be spinning his whimsical wheels, it's really exciting to see the new generation of filmmakers who are taking his lead and finding ways to refine and expand the visual vocabulary he introduced.
Gondry always has a "Let's put on a show!" aesthetic that serves his inventions very well. But, he always seems outside of his comfort zone when he tries to make it too slick and commercial (The Green Hornet). Academy Films has taken the free-wheeling, world-in-a-warehouse, one-take of Lucas With The Lid Off and honed it into something slick without becoming sterile.
Also, the song is dang tasty.
